Gyoza: Passion Project
Date:
2021
My Role:
Video Production (Storyboarding, Videographer, Video Editor)
Tools:
Adobe Premiere Pro
This video is a passion project collaboration with my fiancé. He is an aspiring chef who loves to cook for me. And as a supportive consumer, I wanted to promote his skills and passion by creating content for one of my favorite dishes he makes, Gyoza!
My Role and Challenges
When we were still living in Singapore, a lot of people were selling their homemade dishes to make amends during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since his Gyoza was the best ;) I helped out by promoting the product. We took photos and created video content to post on social media. And we sold Gyoza to our friends!
At that time, I was addicted to watching Daniel Schiffer on Youtube. His content is gold. One of his videos was about creating a B Roll 101 that inspired me to produce one for my husband’s Gyoza.
I listed out all the ingredients and objects used that will appear in the sequence. The idea here is to take the objects and associate them with an action. For example, a piece of garlic that we can roll, toss or chop. Then take those actions, and turn them into a sequence/shot list. This is not a fixed storyboard, so there is room for creativity and adjustments while shooting on location.

To begin with, I didn’t have the fancy equipment. I own a Nikon D3000 (since college 2010. ancient lol!) and a 35mm lens. A GoPro Hero 7 and a couple of table lights. I tried to make it work.

The Outcome
The Gyoza business didn’t push through though. But people loved the photos and videos posted on social media. They commented it looked professionally made. 1 person even asked if he can apply to be a videographer (lol!). It was a fun passion project! I did learn a lot from the process. Maybe this can be applied to another business in the future. Stay tuned!
